David Howlett, head teacher at Perth Wood School, recently trialed the latest innovation from 3M’s Abrasive Systems Division.

The 3M™ Xtract Cubitron II Net Disc 710W is a premium net/mesh disc that allows for virtually dust-free sanding. The 3M Precision-Shaped Grain is arranged in a unique pattern to deliver an industry-leading cut-rate and long life. The 3M Xtract™ Cubitron II Net Disc 710W allows for a cleaner work environment than traditional discs with dust extraction holes. It has a hook-and-loop backing for quick and easy disc changes and is ideal for a wide variety of substrates and applications including stock removal and fine finishing. It is available in a range of grades from 80+ to 320+.

‘I have just completed a sanding job of multiple solid jarrah panels (1000x600mm) using 80 grit and 120 grit. The results were very interesting……. I have been using an alternative mesh discs for many years so I am very familiar with the performance and what I can expect in terms of square metre performance before requiring a disc change.’

‘I compared two 80 grit discs using a Bosch GET75-150 driven head sander on 3.5 speed, connected to a 36L Bosch M class dust extractor set on low. The 3M 80 grit 3M XTRACT disc removed all machine marks in 120 – 140 seconds while the competing brand took 180 – 200 seconds per panel face …..so around a 50% longer sanding time than 3M!

‘There were also two other very noticeable points, the 3M Xtract discs left a far finer finish than which made a considerable difference in work time. The 3M Xtract did the work of an 80 grit abrasive but left a finish close to 120 grit. Also the competing disc let noticeable amounts of dust escape from the perimeter of the sander despite the vacuum working effectively. There was no noticeable dust escaping when using the 3M Xtract discs even when overhanging the edges of the Jarrah panels.’
