Considerations When Choosing Earmuffs

  • Comfortable Fit

    Although earmuffs are easier to wear than earplugs, it is still possible to wear earmuffs incorrectly. This depends on the other types of personal protection equipment worn with them, such as hard hats, safety glasses, or welding shields. Even other type of headgear like hoodies, hair nets, and caps can lead to loss or reduction of hearing protection.

  • Style

    Not all earmuffs are created equally. They generally come in three different styles to increase comfort and compliance: over the head, hard hat attached, and back banded. Additionally, specialty earmuffs are also available to meet the needs of specific professions, such as welders, utility workers, and airport ground crew.

  • Communication

    It's challenging for workers to pay attention to warning signals or interact with one other if they're working in an excessively noisy environment. Workers who have to communicate on-the-job need earmuffs that don't interfere with their conversations while providing excellent hearing protection.

  • Protection Levels

    Earmuffs that don't fit right prevent workers from receiving adequate hearing protection, putting them at risks of injuries and potential hearing loss. To achieve adequate dual protection, it is important to first select an earplug with the desired attenuation and then select a thin, well-fitted earmuff that can be worn over top. Another option is to fit-test the earmuff to determine whether the worker is receiving adequate protection against hazardous noise.
